2-[2-(2,4-Dichlorophenoxy)phenyl]acetic acid (Diclofenac) is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug that has been shown to be effective in the treatment of bowel disease. The drug is an inhibitor of cyclooxygenase and blocks the synthesis of prostaglandins. Diclofenac may have a synergistic effect with other drugs such as salicylic acid, indomethacin, or ibuprofen when taken for prolonged periods. Diclofenac is also used to treat eye disorders such as iritis, iritis-scleritis syndrome, and uveitis. This drug has been shown to inhibit the production of inflammatory mediators such as leukotrienes and prostaglandins. It also prevents phospholipases from releasing arachidonic acid from cell membranes.
