Ioxaglic acid is a diagnostic agent that is used in the diagnosis of kidney disease. It is used to assess renal function and glomerular filtration rate (GFR). Ioxaglic acid is injected intravenously and its passage through the kidneys can be detected by imaging. This agent can also be used to detect or diagnose other conditions, such as heart disease. Ioxaglic acid has been shown to increase the blood flow into the kidneys, which may indicate an improvement in renal function, and it has been shown to have beneficial effects on systolic blood pressure. The risk of this agent causing adverse effects on the heart is low because it does not cross the blood-brain barrier. However, iodixanol may be required if there are concerns about iodide accumulation in the thyroid gland.
