This complex inhibits the enzyme nitrate reductase, which converts nitric oxide into nitrite. Nitrite then reacts with erythrocytes to form methemoglobin, which reduces the oxygen carrying capacity of red blood cells (RBCs). Inhibition of nitric oxide production leads to decreased inflammation and an improvement in symptoms associated with inflammatory bowel disease and alopecia areata.
