2-(3-Methyl-2,4-dioxo-thiazolidin-5-ylamino)-benzoic acid (MTBA) is a chelate ligand that binds to the CB2 receptor and inhibits the production of proinflammatory cytokines. This compound has been shown to have anti-cancer effects on cervical cancer cells in vitro. MTBA has also been shown to inhibit tumor growth in vivo. The reaction mechanism for MTBA is not yet fully understood, but it may involve hydrogen bonding between the amine group of MTBA and the CO groups of the receptor. The crystal structures of MTBA bound to CB2 receptors have been determined using x-ray crystallography. These structures show that there are two conformations for MTBA bound to CB2 receptors, one with a low energy conformation and one with a high energy conformation.
