4-(Decyloxy)benzenol is a low molecular weight compound that is soluble in organic solvents. It is a mesomorphic liquid that changes to solid form at low temperatures and melts at higher temperatures. 4-(Decyloxy)benzenol is cytotoxic to cells, and has been shown to inhibit the phospholipase A2-catalyzed release of arachidonic acid from cell membranes. This compound also inhibits the synthesis of leukotrienes and prostaglandins, which may be due to its ability to inhibit cellular lipid metabolism by inhibiting phospholipase A2 activity. 4-(Decyloxy)benzenol has been found to have an optical purity of 99%. This molecule has been used as a model for cytosolic phospholipase A2 in assays, where it has demonstrated resistance against heterocyclic compounds such as ketone or alkyl halides, but not against phenols or alcohol
