It is a potent inhibitor of the enzyme cholinesterase and inhibits the activity of many other enzymes in the central nervous system. Metomidate hydrochloride has been shown to have pharmacokinetic properties that are similar to those of etomidate. The drug can be administered by aerosol or intravenously. Metomidate hydrochloride is less potent than etomidate, but it has a longer duration of action and can be given as a single dose. Metomidate hydrochloride has been used as an alternative to etomidate for blood sampling because it causes less stress on the animal being sampled.
