N-Methyl-DL-glutamic acid is a molecule that inhibits the production of proteins vital for cell division. It binds to bacterial 16S ribosomal RNA and inhibits protein synthesis, leading to cell death by inhibiting the production of proteins vital for cell division. N-Methyl-DL-glutamic acid has been shown to be effective against influenza virus and cancer cells. The inhibitory activities of N-methyl glutamic acid have been found in several types of bacteria, including those responsible for meningitis (N. meningitidis) and septicemia (Escherichia coli). This compound also shows activity against proteases such as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) protease and trypsin.
