Propiverine hydrochloride is a drug that belongs to the class of ester hydrochlorides. It is an inhibitor of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine and has been shown to have inhibitory properties in vitro. Propiverine hydrochloride has been used as a locomotor stimulant for patients with Parkinson's disease, although it has not been approved for this use in the United States. Propiverine hydrochloride may be effective in the treatment of overactive bladder and urinary incontinence in geriatric patients, but its effects on muscle function are unknown. In vivo studies suggest that propiverine hydrochloride modulates detrusor muscle contractility by acting on muscarinic receptors.
