Violanthrone-79 is a fluorescent aromatic hydrocarbon. It binds to DNA and other biological macromolecules, such as proteins, by hydrophobic interactions. The uptake of Violanthrone-79 in cells is dependent on the orientation of the aromatic ring, which is influenced by the particle size. Violanthrone-79 is used for the study of surface properties and binding constants of biomolecules. It can be used as an emulsifying agent or reaction medium in organic synthesis.
