Gelsemiol is a potentiation product that is extracted from the roots of Gelsemium sempervirens. It has been shown to have neurotrophic and bioactivities and can be used as a dietary supplement. Gelsemiol has been shown to act as a potentiator, which enhances the activity of other drugs. This extract has also been found to exhibit anti-inflammatory properties in plant cells. Gelsemiol is soluble in water and can be used for the separation of complex mixtures by gel chromatography. The chemical structure of gelsemiol is composed of two molecules, namely loganic acid and asperulosidic acid. Loganic acid is a molecule with one asymmetric carbon atom, while asperulosidic acid contains two asymmetric carbons.
Gelsemium sempervirens plants are grown in China, Europe, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and Thailand. The roots are collected at least three times per year
