1-[2-(4-Chlorophenyl)acetyl]piperidine-4-carboxylic acid is a structural analog of the amino acid 1,4-dihydropyridine. It is a potent antiviral agent that has been shown to inhibit the replication of many viruses, including alphaviruses (e.g., Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus) and human immunodeficiency virus. In addition, it can penetrate the blood-brain barrier and has been shown to protect against infections in humans caused by alphaviruses and some other viruses. This compound can be used as a component of vaccines that are intended to protect against infection by these viruses.1-[2-(4-Chlorophenyl)acetyl]piperidine-4-carboxylic acid is metabolized primarily through oxidation by cytochrome P450 enzymes or conjugation with glucuronic acid.
