2-(4-Chlorophenyl)cyclopropan-1-amine is a monoamine oxidase inhibitor that has been shown to inhibit the activity of rat brain monoamine oxidase. 2-(4-Chlorophenyl)cyclopropan-1-amine inhibits the uptake and reuptake of serotonin, which leads to increased levels of this neurotransmitter in the synaptic cleft. Serotonin is also involved in many other processes such as vasoconstriction, platelet aggregation, and blood clotting. The inhibition of serotonin uptake and reuptake may lead to neurotoxic effects. 2-(4-Chlorophenyl)cyclopropan-1-amine also inhibits the activity of monoamine oxidase A, which is involved in the metabolism of dopamine, epinephrine, norepinephrine, and serotonin.
