Dehydroevodiamine hydrochloride is a glutamate-mimetic drug that has been shown to have many therapeutic properties. It inhibits enzyme activities in the metabolic pathways of various neurotransmitters, including gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and acetylcholine. Dehydroevodiamine hydrochloride has been shown to be clinically effective for the treatment of chronic exposure to methyl nicotinate and other drugs that can lead to an anticholinesterase activity or acetylcholinesterase inhibition. Dehydroevodiamine hydrochloride also has antioxidant properties, which may be due to its ability to inhibit lipid peroxidation by scavenging free radicals.
