Cyclocalopin A is a natural product that has been isolated from the fungus Boletus rubripes. Cyclocalopin A has been shown to have antifungal and anticancer properties, as well as having anti-inflammatory and anti-diabetic activities. Cyclocalopin A is a glyoxylate with a stereoselective bioactivity, showing activity towards fungal cells but not mammalian cells in vitro. The bioavailability of cyclocalopin A has been shown to be improved by epimerization, which converts the hydroxyl group into the hydroxy group. The structure of cyclocalopin A was first determined using spectroscopic methods and later confirmed by X-ray crystallography. This compound is currently being used as a model compound for other biologically active compounds due to its availability, stability, and low cost.
