Copper aluminate is a compound that consists of copper and aluminium oxides. It is used in the production of optical materials, such as mirrors, lenses, and prisms. Copper aluminate can be produced by the reaction of aluminium with copper oxide at high temperatures in an electric furnace. The reaction mechanism for this process is not well understood, but it is believed that the metal surface plays an important role in the formation of this material. The photocatalytic activity of copper aluminate has been shown to be due to its ability to form hydrogen chloride on the surface when exposed to ultraviolet light. This oxidation catalyst also has excellent catalytic properties and can be used as a feedstock for other reactions involving metal carbonyls. Copper aluminate has a low refractive index and structural analysis shows it to have a layered structure with alternating layers of aluminium oxide and copper oxide.
