20-Hydroxyeicosanoic acid is a metabolite of arachidonic acid. It is produced by the action of cyclooxygenase on arachidonic acid, by lipoxygenase on linoleic acid, or by cytochrome P450 enzymes on eicosapentaenoic acid. 20-Hydroxyeicosanoic acid has been shown to have a variety of biological functions in plants, including the synthesis of suberin and lignin and the regulation of cell growth. 20-Hydroxyeicosanoic acid has been found in a number of tissues and various mutant alleles have been identified. The chemical nature of this compound is not completely understood but it has been proposed that it is an intermediate in the metabolism of arachidonic acid.
