Decanoic acid is a fatty acid with the chemical formula CH3(CH2)7COOH. It is a colorless liquid that is soluble in water, but insoluble in ether and chloroform. Decanoic acid has two different shapes, known as conformers, which can interconvert by rotation around the central carbon-carbon bond. The more stable conformer has an unbroken octagonal ring of three double bonds. In this form, it consists of a central carbon atom surrounded by eight hydrogen atoms and six carbon atoms.
