This compound has been shown to inhibit the glucose transporter GLUT1, which is responsible for the transport of glucose across the plasma membrane. 3-Deoxy-3-fluoro-D-fructose inhibits cancer cells by inhibiting galactitol production through inhibition of gluconeogenesis. It also inhibits oxidative phosphorylation in lymphocytic leukemia cells, leading to apoptosis. 3-Deoxy-3-fluoro-D-fructose has been shown to inhibit cancer growth by blocking glucose uptake in xenopus oocytes.
