Delphinidin 3-O-rutinoside chloride is a flavonol glycoside that can be found in plants. It is an inhibitor of the enzyme phenylalanine ammonia-lyase, which catalyzes the conversion of phenylalanine to p-hydroxybenzoic acid. The inhibition of this enzyme by delphinidin 3-O-rutinoside chloride prevents the accumulation of p-hydroxybenzoic acid in the urine, which may be measured as a urinary metabolite. Delphinidin 3-O-rutinoside chloride also has been shown to suppress gene expression in plant cells when grown in tissue culture. This compound can be found at low levels in triticum aestivum and other plant species, and it is present at higher concentrations in dry weight samples than in wet weight samples.
