This drug has been shown to bind to the d2 receptor and increase levels of dopamine in the brain, which may have a beneficial effect on cognition. Dihydrexidine hydrochloride also modulates catechol-o-methyltransferase and thereby prevents the breakdown of catecholamines such as dopamine. It has been used for depression and opioid analgesia. Dihydrexidine hydrochloride is a prodrug that undergoes rapid metabolism by esterases or glucuronidases to dihydrexidine, its active form. Dihydrexidine hydrochloride has been shown to bind specifically to an antigen present in maleate-treated rats, but not in control rats, suggesting that there is a reaction between these two substances. The phosphate ions are required for this reaction.br>br>
