Gentiopicroside is an anti-inflammatory agent that belongs to the class of quinones. It has been shown to possess a hypoglycemic effect in mice and in humans, which may be due to its ability to inhibit insulin release from the pancreas. Gentiopicroside has also been shown to have chemiluminescent properties in vitro. This agent may reduce inflammatory responses by inhibiting the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-10. Gentiopicroside has also been shown to decrease cellular adhesion and migration through inhibition of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and increase cellular proliferation by inhibiting p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) activation.
