It is an important component of polyphosphates and can be used for oxygen transport. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of cancer cells by binding to monoclonal antibodies that are targeted against CD20 and CD22 on cancer cells. IP also inhibits the activity of kinases and phosphatases in mammalian cells. This may be due to the inhibition of cytokine release from macrophages treated with IL-1β.
