1-(4-Hydrazinobenzyl)-1H-1,2,4-triazole Dihydrochloride (HNTD) is an organic compound that is used as a reagent in organic synthesis. It is a white solid that can be produced by the reaction of 1H-1,2,4-triazole with hydrazine and sodium nitrite in water to form the diazonium salt. The diazonium salt reacts with dimethyl diazotization to produce HNTD. Impurities may be removed by reacting the HNTD with benzoic acid or benzoate. This process produces a crystalline product that contains no more than 0.5% impurities. Industrial applications for HNTD include its use as a catalyst for the production of nitrites from ammonia and nitrous oxide.
