Vitexin is a natural compound that is extracted from the fruit of Vitex agnus-castus. It has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties and inhibit the production of proinflammatory cytokines. Vitexin also inhibits the growth of cancer cells by inducing apoptosis, or programmed cell death, in vitro. Vitexin has been shown to inhibit neuronal death in vitro and myocardial infarct size in vivo. The mechanism of vitexin's anti-inflammatory effects appears to be mediated by GSH-px activities and may be due to its ability to induce autophagy.
