3'-Azido-2',3'-dideoxyadenosine is an antiviral drug that inhibits the synthesis of DNA by inhibiting the enzyme ribonucleotide reductase. This drug is administered to patients with HIV as a cytostatic drug and has shown effectiveness in clinical trials. 3'-Azido-2',3'-dideoxyadenosine binds to the virus's RNA polymerase and prevents it from synthesizing viral proteins, which are needed for replication. It also binds to human telomerase and blocks its activity.
