It is a potent activator that increases the activity of this enzyme, which regulates cellular energy metabolism. AICAR has been shown to induce significant cytotoxicity in k562 cells and to increase the levels of ATP in these cells. This compound has also been shown to have potential use in metabolic disorders, such as type 2 diabetes, by increasing uptake and kinetic of glucose. AICAR has also been shown to activate the AMPK pathway in prostate cancer cells and increase cellular physiology.
