It is also used as a catalyst in organic reactions, such as the conversion of cyclohexanone to adipic acid. Cobalt (II) chromate is a strong oxidizing agent with a red-orange colour. The kinetics of this reaction have been studied using cyclohexanone as the substrate. The rate law was found to be first order with respect to cobalt (II) ion concentration and second order with respect to cyclohexanone concentration. The kinetic data were fitted using an ionic mechanism, which has been confirmed by digital simulation. This mechanism suggests that the reaction proceeds via a radical mechanism, where an acrylonitrile radical attacks the chromium atom on the cobalt (II) ion to form an intermediate complex that decomposes into acrylonitrile and chromium (III).
