3-Phospho-3-pentulosonic acid (N3PT) is a metastable form of 3-phospho-D-glyceric acid. It is a metabolite in the pentose phosphate pathway and has been shown to inhibit the enzyme activity of hydroxylase, which is necessary for the synthesis of fatty acids and cholesterol. N3PT has also been shown to have an inhibitory effect on cell growth and to induce cancer cell death in breast tissue. This compound interacts with thiamine pyrophosphate, which stabilizes ribonucleotide reductase, leading to an increase in the pentose phosphate pathway. This increased activity can be observed in both tissues and cells. N3PT has also been shown to inhibit leukemia cells by decreasing the amount of ATP available for use.
