It interacts with the G protein coupled receptor 2-adrenergic receptor, and activates adenylyl cyclase to produce cAMP. 8-CPT-cAMP also induces mitochondrial membrane potential depolarization and Ca2+ release from the endoplasmic reticulum, which leads to cell death. The pro-apoptotic protein Bax is upregulated by 8-CPT-cAMP in cells and contributes to cell death.
