It has been shown to induce chronic lymphocytic leukemia in mice and humans, which is an indication of its clinical relevance. 3',3'-Cyclic guanosine monophosphate-adenosine monophosphate induces cancer by inhibiting the production of cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterases, which are enzymes that break down cyclic nucleotides. This leads to elevated levels of cyclic nucleotides and an increase in intracellular cAMP levels.
