It is synthesized by the reaction of 5'-deoxy-5-fluoro cytidine with 3-methylbutanol in the presence of an activator (e.g., tetrazole). The methyl group on the 3′ position of cytidine has been shown to improve antiviral activity, as well as DNA and RNA synthesis.
