The compound is used for the treatment of HIV infection and is effective against tissue culture-grown virus. 2'-Deoxycytidine-5'-O-(1-thiotriphosphate) sodium salt inhibits the activity of mammalian DNA polymerase and has been shown to inhibit the replication of HIV in tissue culture. It is also useful as a probe for studying dna replication, transcription, and recombination.
