It acts by competitively inhibiting the activity of viral DNA polymerase, preventing the addition of nucleotides to the growing DNA strand and thereby halting viral replication. This product is a deoxyribonucleoside monophosphate that is synthesized from an antiviral ribonucleoside monophosphate. 2'-Deoxy-5'-O-DMT-N2-isobutyrylguanosine 3'-thiophosphoramidite has been shown to have anticancer properties in vitro.
