It has been used in the laboratory as a primer and as a biochemical tool to study viruses. 2'-O-Methylcytidine-5'-monophosphate triethylammonium salt is active against murine leukemia virus, but not against ciliated protozoan parasites such as Tetrahymena pyriformis. This compound has also been shown to inhibit the enzyme form of HIV reverse transcriptase and to be cytotoxic at high concentrations.
