This compound reacts with trifluoroacetic acid to form an intermediate that undergoes a rearrangement step to give a carbonyl compound. N,N-Dimethyl 4-chlorobenzamide does not react with carbon dioxide or water, but reacts readily with hydrogen chloride and hydrogen bromide in aqueous solution. Nonetheless, it does not undergo substitution reactions at either position of the chlorine atom.
