Trilinolenin is a polyunsaturated fatty acid that is found in the seed oil of Nepeta cataria. Trilinolenin has been shown to lower low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol levels by inhibiting cholesterol synthesis. The molecular structure of trilinolenin can be examined using sephadex G-100 and thin layer chromatography. These techniques are used to study the transport properties and acyl chain composition of this molecule. Trilinolenin also has diagnostic potential, as it has been shown to inhibit protein synthesis in cancer cells and can be used as a sample preparation agent for reaction mechanisms involving lipids.
