It has been shown to sensitize dorsal root ganglia neurons in vitro, producing a response to the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. This peptide also induces apoptosis in neuronal cells and increases the permeability of blood vessels in tissues by activating vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) receptors. The effects of this peptide were studied in humans with bowel disease or inflammatory bowel disease. It was found that it may be effective for treating these diseases as well as necrosis factor-mediated inflammation. This peptide is also known to activate IL-10, which is an anti-inflammatory cytokine.
