It is an isomer of hematoporphyrin, which has been shown to be an effective photosensitizer for the treatment of psoriasis. Methyl 3-acetyl-4-oxopentanoate has also been shown to have degradative properties, and can be used to synthesize pyrrole compounds. This synthetic porphyrin precursor can also be used in the production of other porphyrins such as protoporphyrins and porphyrins.
