Chlorobis(ethylene)iridium(I) Dimer is a neutral ligand that reacts with nucleophiles in an associative manner. It undergoes nucleophilic attack by an electron-rich atom or molecule, such as ethylene, and forms a new bond to it. The resulting chloro-complex is called an ethylene-dimer. Chlorobis(ethylene)iridium(I) Dimer is also able to react with cyclooctene and alkene by the same mechanism. The basicity of the ligand increases with the number of oxygen atoms on the ring.
