1,8-Bis(2-pyridyl)-3,6-dithiaoctane is a chloride ion that has been found to be an efficient electrocatalyst for the oxidation of alcohols. It was shown to have a higher rate enhancement than other oxidizing agents and exhibited good stability in air. The redox potentials of 1,8-bis(pyridyl)octane were found to be more positive than those of ferrocene and other redox agents. This compound also has the capability of transferring electrons. 1,8-Bis(2-pyridyl)-3,6-dithiaoctane can also act as a radiation shield. It exhibits low energy radiation protection and second order rate constants that are greater than those of ferrocene and other electron transfer agents.
