It also has anti-bacterial and antifungal properties, but not against Mycobacterium tuberculosis or other acid-fast bacteria. Pr 39 is a mammalian protein that can be produced by porcine cells. It is an immunomodulator, as it can increase the production of cytokines such as IL-2 and TNFα, which are important for immune system function. Pr 39 has been shown to have antibacterial activity against some Gram negative bacteria, such as Escherichia coli, Salmonella enterica, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Proteus mirabilis.
