Yu Borylation Ligand is a boron-containing natural product that inhibits bacterial growth. It binds to the 4-hydroxyquinoline, an intermediate in the biosynthesis of staphylococcal acridone. Yu Borylation Ligand is also effective against gram-negative organisms such as E. coli and Salmonella enterica. Yu Borylation Ligand has been shown to be more potent than acridone and ternata, which are other anti-bacterial compounds found in plants, by inhibiting the demethylation of 4-hydroxyquinoline to form epoxides. This compound can also inhibit bacterial growth by binding to the thiolate group of cysteine residues in proteins. Yu Borylation Ligand has been synthesized with an asymmetric synthesis that allows for its selective production from a chiral starting material.
