- ATPA
(R,S)-ATPA is a nucleoside that binds to the nuclear DNA of bacteria and inhibits their growth. It also has cardiac effects in mammals and can cause death of neurons. The polymerase chain reaction technique was used to identify the sequence of (R,S)-ATPA. The high values obtained for this compound were consistent with its antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive bacteria. This molecule has been found in plants as an amide form, which is a cytosolic Ca2+ ionophore that increases Ca2+ levels in the cytoplasm by diffusing into cells and then releasing it from the cell membrane. The glutamate receptor may be involved in the physiological function of (R,S)-ATPA.
