The product is selectively derivatized at the nitrogen atom of the piperidine ring. BAH is used as a chemical intermediate in medicinal chemistry, such as for the synthesis of piperidines and other heterocycles. This compound has been shown to be efficient in converting 1,2-dihydropyridines into 1,2-dihydroquinolines with high yields and high levels of purity. BAH is also used for the synthesis of multigram quantities of peptides and proteins by postsynthetic modifications on natural amino acids or unnatural amino acids with reactive functional groups such as azide or bromide.
