2-Methoxyethyl methanesulfonate is a ligand that has been shown to bind to potassium hydride. The 2-methoxyethyl group is a nucleophilic and can react with an electrophilic center, such as the sulfur atom in methane sulfonate. This interaction may lead to the formation of a covalent bond between the metal ion and the ligand. The reaction time in this experiment was varied from 10 seconds to 190 minutes. It has been shown that this ligand binds more strongly to potassium hydride than other ligands including piperazine, which is used as a control. This compound has also been shown to have photocatalytic activity, producing hydrogen gas when exposed to light at wavelengths of 360 nm or greater. In addition, these compounds have been found by x-ray crystal structures analysis to be able to form nanoparticles with diameters of 4 nm or less
