(E)-Cyclooct-4-enyl 2,5-dioxo-1-pyrrolidinyl carbonate (COC) is a molecule that has been shown to have growth factor activities in vitro. It has been shown to be able to inhibit the uptake of prostate cancer cells by binding to specific receptors. The radiation treatment model system has demonstrated that COC can bind to DNA and inhibit the synthesis of proteins essential for cell division. In vitro experiments with human serum have indicated that COC is metabolized through hydrolysis by esterases or glucuronidases, oxidation by cytochrome P450 enzymes, reduction by glutathione reductase, or conjugation with glucuronic acid. The pharmacokinetic properties of COC have been studied in rats and mice using blood sampling techniques and the results show a rapid elimination from plasma after intravenous administration. Further studies are needed for determining its efficacy as an anti-cancer drug in animal models
