3-Methylnaphthalen-2-ol is an isomer of naphthalene. It is a synthetic compound that has been postulated to be an unsymmetrical, biomolecular aminative intermediate in the formation of triazolium ion. This intermediate can undergo bond cleavage and mechanistic oxidation, yielding the oxidation products 3-methylnaphthalen-2-one and 4-chloro-3-methylnaphthalene. The rate of these reactions is determined by kinetic methods. 3-Methylnaphthalen-2-ol can be synthesized by reacting catechol with nitroethane in the presence of a base catalyst. Irradiation or UV light will induce photochemical reactions between 3-methylnaphthalen-2-ol and oxygen, which may result in the formation of methylbenzopyrylium ion.
