This product can be used as a herbicide by reacting with the phenyl group of acetaldehyde to form a phenoxyacetal. It also reacts with nitrous acid to form an aziridinium ion intermediate that reacts with ethoxycarbonylmethyl to form ethoxycarbonylmethylthioisothiocyanate.
