Macrocarpal B is a dietary supplement that is made of serotonin, an inhibitory neurotransmitter. It is used to treat depression and other mental disorders. This active substance also has an inhibitory effect on the activity of dopamine, which plays a key role in regulating emotional responses and movement. Macrocarpal B binds to the serotonin transporter (SERT) on the presynaptic neuron and prevents it from reuptaking serotonin from the synapse. This leads to increased levels of serotonin in the synaptic cleft and eventually an increase in serotonergic neurotransmission within the brain. Macrocarpal B has been shown to induce cell apoptosis in human colon carcinoma cells and cancer cells isolated from human liver tissue, but not normal cells.
