Methyl 3-(6-chloro-5-pivalamidopyridin-2-yl)-acrylate (Covid-19) is a new antiviral drug that inhibits the virus from replicating. Covid-19 is a prodrug that is activated by alcohols and hydroximines in the body to form an acyloxymethylpyridine, which binds covalently to RNA polymerase, preventing viral replication. Covid-19 has been shown to be effective against the H1N1 virus and other influenza strains, including avian flu and swine flu. Covid-19 also has a low toxicity profile in animals and humans, with no significant side effects when administered at doses up to 100mg/kg. Covid-19 has been shown to be effective as both a monotherapy and as part of combination therapy against pandemic influenza strains.
